At 3 months of age your baby has formed a strong attachment to you, she starts giggling and babbling and copying your facial expressions. She becomes stronger too, can hold Her head upright, stretches her arms trying to reach for an object and starts rolling over.
To support Her mental and physical development at this age try offering Her these Montessori aligned activities:
- Rattles: Dowel with Bells, Ring with Beads, Cylinder with Bell. These simple yet beautiful rattles will allow your Child to work on grasping and holding as well as exploring cause and effect as She moves her hand. Cylinder with Bell will serve you later as well: when your Child starts crawling, this rattle becomes a great point of interest when rolling across the floor and making an appealing jingling sound.
- Spinning Drum will help your Child to work out Her hand and wrist muscles as She reaches and spins the drum. The drum has 5 colourful panes and one mirror pane, the bell inside the drum makes a jingle sound, this encourages the Child to spin the drum over and over again making it a great activity for tummy time.
- Interlocking Discs is a classic Montessori material that helps your Child to work on hand-to-hand transfer skills, the size and shape of these discs are perfect for passing it from one hand to another.
You can complement these Montessori materials with other activities, here are some ideas:
- Let your baby study Her reflection in the mirror,
- Introduce a high contrast picture book in addition to Her black and white cards,
- Let Her explore a variety of different textures: these can be any household objects that have different to touch finishes (rough vs smooth),
- Play a peek-a-boo game with your little one,
- Tie a helium filled balloon to your baby's foot: the balloon will move as she stretches and kicks allowing your baby to explore cause and effect.
Although we suggest that you introduce these activities to your baby at the age of 3 to 6 months, remember that all children develop at their own pace and your infant might still be interested in Montessori activities for babies 0 to 3 months, so keep offering those, go with the flow and Follow the Child!
